Underslung (Suspension) Overhead Crane

Product Overview

The Underslung Overhead Crane, also known as a suspension crane, hangs from and travels along the underside of an existing roof or ceiling structure rather than running on top of columns via a dedicated runway. This design is chosen when a building’s existing roof trusses can support the crane load, avoiding the cost of installing dedicated support columns and runway beams.

Structure Composition

  • Main Girder: A single or double girder, sized for the required capacity and span, suspended below the runway beams rather than supported from underneath.
  • Suspension Runway Beams: Fixed to and suspended from the building’s existing roof trusses or overhead steel structure, running the length of crane travel.
  • End Trucks: Underslung end trucks with wheels that ride on the lower flange of the suspension runway beam.
  • Electric Hoist: A wire rope or chain hoist mounted on the main girder, sized to the required capacity.
  • Control: Pendant control is standard; remote control is available for larger installations.

Application

  • Existing buildings where the roof structure can support crane loads but no dedicated support columns are available
  • Retrofitting crane capability into an older building without major structural modification
  • Facilities where floor-mounted columns would obstruct existing equipment or floor space
  • Light-to-medium manufacturing and warehouse applications
